The critical passages is a bit more innocuous than portrayed by you I think:

"Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA's first African-American President,"

It also has now been removed from the official pledge and it is not clear whether any candidate actually even read that portion as it was not part of the candidate "vow".

you could be right. thanks for your valid points.

However I find it curious that this was the preamble to the pledge. Why was it withdrawn? And it does seem innocuous on the surface but it seems to subtly imply exactly what the lead sentence of the article read "passage that suggests black families were in better shape during slavery". I was quoting from the article for dramatic effect surely, but bad PR for her, eh?

I was going to post the entire quote as well which I think has been taken out of context. I think she was implying the state of the "traditional American family" as SHE sees it, being heterosexual married two-parent families and stupidly chose to put race into the issue.

Whatever her point, I do not agree nor support Bachman and think it was dumb on her part to even bring up “African American” babies (way to alienate even further) as opposed to ANY baby born in 1860 as having better odds for the two-parent, heterosexual households. The addition of being "born into slavery" was pure ignorance and a marketing ploy to try and get a rise out of folks and call attention to her platform. The wording has since been removed (part of the plan?)...hmmm I think so. Politicians need to wake up and see that the standard model of today’s family unit has changed entirely. It will be interesting to see which/how many others sign on to this now that it is getting the attention she wanted. They have a right to their opinion and what they feel is a definition of marriage and family just as you and I do. Where it matters most is at the polls.

I also saw a report where they were accusing Bachman and her husband of trying to cure homosexuals at their clinic. However upon further review of the report (and video), the insider went to THEM and asked THEM to try and cure his homosexuality and then secretly videotaped the sessions that transpired. I’m not sure I agree with that ploy either.

Oh and you kept calling her Barbara...Barbara is on your mind? Which one? :)

Way to open up a dialogue and speak about important issues that affect us all. Gives me the blues too! LOL Like they say (maybe it was Gandi), We really are the change we want to become and by getting the truth out about the really important issues and people that we as a country are backing or facing as leaders, so we can vote them in or out in order to make those changes. But we have to be careful and try to get at the FULL truth. We can’t rely solely on the media and one-side news reports and get all “blowed-out” of proportion when race and sexuality enter the picture. Stay focused!

Just think, we have an entire year of this political crap to endure! Yay more songs!!

Anonymous, when you wrote '...it is not clear whether any candidate actually even read that portion as it was not part of the candidate "vow",' were you at all disheartened that candidates are signing things they don't read?

Does not bode well for their future as our leaders, does it?

Bachman is one of the C.A.V.E people. Citizens Against Virtually Everything. Except her family farm getting 1000's in government handouts. How does that fit???

MN resident who can't believe we have two losers running for president.

Even if the premise is true, what does this have to do with President Obama? Our society has evolved for better or worse. The state of nuclear household was well established before 2008. Thank you Todd for exposing this ridiculous political pledge, even if those signing it don't even read what they are signing....

Hey Todd!
Love your daily blues! We watch it often! We saw you in NYC last time you were here. Great show!
Keep after the right wing and all their baloney! It is scary what they are preaching! We need more people like you who have visibility to speak out.
Thank VERY much for all that you do!
Sincerely,

As far as mixing politics and entertainment, I say go for it - it's better than some of the pop artists out there who negatively affect the social climate by emphasizing excess materialism, body image or violence. So they may sell more in the short run, and hey you could lose a few fans, but we need more brave role models who talk about the injustices and inequalities of our times. I do wonder if social issues have been lost on today’s music culture.

I cannot even fathom someone telling me I could not marry the person I loved, black, white, Asian, Jewish, same sex or not. Who am I to decide who I fall in love with let alone telling any strangers who they can or cannot fall in love with, marry and create a family. On that note, I cannot see how arranged marriages work, either. Separation of church and state is what we are taught in US history class, yet church is creeping into our government. I think I need more studying up on my history, philosophy and ethics and logic. Government is turning into he said/she said arguments and not taking care of what really matters. We are not keeping up with the rest of the world.

Todd, really glad you got the blues. There's nothing more truly American then that distinctive sound. Why did it take long hair englishmen to teach America the blues? Wish I go back in time and listen to Robert Johnson live on some hot evening southern porch.... With some warm whiskey.. That I think, is a core American value my friend. Thanks for the dailies brother.
